OMBUDSMAN ENGAGES THE SIERRA LEONE POLICE EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT BOARD

THE SIERRA LEONE POLICE EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT BOARD

The Ombudsman Tejan Ahmed Israel Jah Esq has paid a courtesy visit to the Executive Management Board of the Sierra Leone Police Force.

In his presentation the Ombudsman said that his Office is created by the Constitution of Sierra Leone Act No.6 of 1991 with its enabling legislation, which is the Ombudsman’s Act of 1997.

The Ombudsman stated that the Sierra Leone Police Force is a strategic partner in the protection of human rights.
He stated that his mandate is to investigate any action taken or omitted to be taken by or on behalf of a department or ministry of Government, any statutory corporation or institutions of higher learning or education, setup entirely or partly out of public funds and also any member of the Public Service: being an action taken or omitted to be taken in the exercise of the administrative functions of that department, ministry statutory corporation, institution or person.

The Ombudsman stated that his intervention is to take appropriate actions to remedy, correct or reverse any administrative act complained of. He further stated that the SLP should ensure that people regain confidence in the Police and also to rely on them for security.

The Inspector General of Police William Fayah Sellu said that the message of the Ombudsman is an eye opener and that the SLP will reorganize its perception of the Ombudsman's Office and noted that they are currently revising the disciplinary regulations and that the Complaint Discipline and Internal Investigations Department of the SLP receives complaints from members of the public against Police.

He reaffirmed his commitment to work with the Ombudsman and notes that the SLP is open to checks at any time, whilst looking forward to developing a good working relationship with the Ombudsman's Office.
